We are heartbroken and outraged by the tragic death of Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man from Minnesota. Sam was subjected to horrific abuse before his life was stolen from him in what authorities are calling a "beyond depraved" act of violence. Five individuals have been charged with his murder, and the investigation continues.

Sam was known for his compassionate nature, having worked at a group home for disabled individuals in Little Canada, Minnesota. He was close with his mother and two siblings, and his family remembers him as a loving and kind-hearted person.

Sam deserved safety, respect, and a future. His murder is a devastating reminder of the ongoing violence that trans people—especially those who are most vulnerable—face every day. We cannot let this pass as just another tragedy. We must stand up for Sam and for all trans lives, demanding justice, protection, and the respect every person deserves.

Our deepest condolences go out to Sam’s family, friends, and community. May they find strength and support in the face of this unimaginable loss.

Yesterday, Governor DeSantis vowed to veto a bill that would have changed the in-state tuition policy for Dreamers and required schools and churches to cooperate with ICE because it wasn’t strict enough.

We are urging lawmakers to not override this veto. We call on the legislature to ensure Dreamers have access to quality education in Florida, and keep ICE 500 feet away from sanctuary sites like schools and churches so that no student has to live in fear.

The Trump administration’s latest executive order attempts to strip federal funding from providers offering gender-affirming care to people under 19.

This move not only restricts life-saving healthcare access but also rolls back crucial civil rights protections, putting trans youth at even greater risk.

This isn’t just policy—it’s a direct threat to the safety and well-being of trans youth. While legal teams work to challenge this order in court, it sets a dangerous precedent in the ongoing struggle for trans rights. Trans youth deserve safe, affirming care and the right to live without fear. On the ground in Florida, we’ll keep working with our partners to ensure trans youth have the support and care they need, no matter what.

Governor DeSantis has called for a special legislative session that threatens to silence the voices of everyday Floridians, preventing them from attending or testifying on critical bills. This session is being conducted behind closed doors, leaving the public in the dark. Floridians deserve to be heard when legislation with significant community impact is being considered.

2025 in the “free state of Florida” is starting with P0rnhub being blocked. #DecriminalizeS3xWork

Here is a quick summary of some of the bills going into effect today:

HB 135: Changes to voter party affiliation – updates must now be made in writing.

HB 267: Modifies building codes – sets time limits for local governments to approve or deny building permit applications.

HB 233: Establishes a 25-foot buffer zone around first responders (including police). Obstructing or interfering within this zone could result in arrest, fines, or jail time.

SB 892: Changes to dental insurance claims processing – requires insurers to process claims more efficiently and provide clearer information on claim denials and payment timelines.

HB 1491: Establishes public record exemptions for investigations by the Department of Legal Affairs.

HB 3: Implements changes to online access and social media rules in Florida. Children under fourteen are banned from social media use. Children between fourteen and fifteen will need verified parental permission to use social media. Adult websites will require identification verification to access them. Some companies have said they will be blocking their website from the state entirely due to security concerns. HB 3 and similar laws are facing legal challenges and will be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court on January 15th, 2025. However, HB 3 goes into effect today, January 1st, 2025.

Violence takes many forms, and its impact can transcend into various aspects of life—especially financial insecurity. When people are forced to choose between safety and survival, it’s a reflection of systems that prioritize profit over people. We need abolition and real solutions that allow everyone to live secure and full lives.

As we observe this season’s holidays, let’s remember that peace and unity will come from dismantling systems of harm and building a world where no one is left behind.

Wh0rephobia impacts EVERY marginalized community. We cannot truly work toward collective liberation without confronting the deeply anti-s3x worker rhetoric woven into our society, culture, and laws. Everyone knows and loves a s3x worker—whether they realize it or not. S3x workers are humans first. They are our friends, family, and community members, yet they are denied safety, protections, and justice, left vulnerable to violence and exploitation. S!ut-shaming and wh0rephobia harm us all, fueling shame and control over our bodies.

We mourn the many lives lost to this violence and stand in solidarity with all s3x workers in the fight for autonomy, safety, dignity, and justice.

A recent article titled New Florida Prison Policy on Trans Healthcare ‘Like Conversion Therapy’ by Beth Schwartzapfel (@bethtmp) sheds light on the horrific treatment of transgender women in Florida’s prison system. It reveals how these women endure systemic abuse, punishment, denial of gender-affirming care, and policies aimed at erasing their identities—drawing troubling parallels to the harmful practices of conversion therapy.

In Florida, restricting healthcare has become a common tactic to target and control marginalized communities. Transgender and gender-expansive individuals already face disproportionate violence and discrimination in society, and these injustices are only intensified within the prison system.

Beth writes, “Under the new policy, the Department of Corrections stated that the prisons will only provide those with gender dysphoria with psychotherapy—and not cross-gender hormones—except ‘in rare instances… if necessary to comply with the U.S. Constitution or a court decision.’ The policy argues that ‘unaddressed psychiatric issues and unaddressed childhood trauma could lead to a misdiagnosis of gender dysphoria,’ and that cross-gender hormones ‘may be requested by persons experiencing short-term delusions or beliefs which may later be changed and reversed.’”

These policies harm transgender people by denying their identity and exacerbating the physical and psychological trauma they endure in an already oppressive prison system. The need for reform (and abolition) is urgent; we must continue to fight for the dignity, healthcare, and rights of all transgender individuals.

🚨BREAKING: Congress has passed H.R. 9594! 🚨

This bill is framed around a provision that offers tax relief to Americans held hostage abroad, but it was really designed to allow the treasury secretary to designate any nonprofit as a 'terrorist supporting organization' and revoke its tax-exempt status.

The U.S. government has a long history of disproportionately weaponizing “terrorist” terminology and propaganda against progressive movements and marginalized communities, including BIPOC and environmental activists. H.R. 9495 will absolutely target or endanger any organization fighting project 2025, the animal agriculture and fossil fuels industries, or advocating for Palestinian emancipation and Land Back.

Today and everyday we love and honor our intersex community, who are continually fighting misinformation and discrimination against their very existence.

It’s hard to know exactly how many people are intersex, but estimates suggest that about 1-2 in 100 people born in the U.S. are intersex. Non-consensual medical procedures aimed at “normalizing” their bodies are still performed on intersex babies, often leading to lifelong trauma, health issues, and confusion.

Intersex people have been marginalized within society and, at times, within LGBTQA2S+ spaces, making it essential to center their experiences and ensure they are genuinely included.

Through education we can bring more acceptance, advocacy, and understanding to our LGBTQIA2S+ community and beyond about our gender and sexual orientation spectrums.

Two years after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling overturned Roe v. Wade, victims of domestic violence face even greater challenges.

The link between restricted abortion access and non-consensual sex is undeniable, with over 133,000 people reporting such incidents in just one year since the ruling. Coercion is one of the most common forms of abuse. Many survivors access abortion care after escaping violence, helping them take back their autonomy and life. Now, more than ever, we must support and amplify the voices of those most affected as abortion access becomes increasingly more difficult particularly for vulnerable people.

Israel’s genocidal destruction in Gaza and across Palestine has caused severe environmental damage, deeply impacting Palestinians and marginalized communities worldwide. This devastation deepens the humanitarian crisis, exacerbates inequalities, worsens resource scarcity, disrupts ecosystems, and contributes to pollution and climate change on a global scale.

The U.S. government’s complicity in supporting and enabling this genocide through the military-industrial complex ensures that the most vulnerable communities bear the brunt of this widespread and devastating violence, prioritizing profit over people both here and abroad.

Here in Florida, the worsening effects of climate change are evident in the increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes, which disproportionately affect our vulnerable communities. As these storms grow more destructive, many people, particularly low-income, disabled, BIPOC, and imprisoned residents are left to suffer or die without adequate support or resources, increasing the dangerous consequences of a system that puts profit and power above people and environmental sustainability. We need a ceasefire and arms embargo now.

Update via @fighttoxicprisons: Hurricane Milton is set to make land fall on the west coast of Florida later this evening as a Category 3 with not enough time left to evacuate carceral facilities at most risk. While windshear helped reduce Milton's strength it will still be a devastating direct hit on Florida.

While Orient Road Jail did evacuate in Hillsborough County; Manattee, Lee, Pinellas, and St. Johns County jails are not evacuating, leaving incarcearted people inside Mandatory Evacuation Zones.

Additionally multiple state prisons in Hernando, Pasco, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and Lee counties have not evacuated accoridng to reporting from Fresh Take Florida.

After the devastation of Helene, mutual aid groups and community members are mobilizing to assist their neighbors through the crisis. Femme and BIPOC focused collectives are helping bring essential health supplies to marginalized communities whose needs are often overlooked.

Extreme weather events like Hurricane Helene further restrict access to period products, abortion services, birth control, and more, disproportionately affecting women, girls, and gender-diverse people who already deal with complex financial inequalities and hostile healthcare environments.

Sexual and reproductive health is intricately woven into every facet of our lives and actions, shaping access to essential rights and resources like healthcare, safety, education, and equitable opportunities for marginalized communities.

Hurricane Katrina caused disruption in family planning services for people in New Orleans even five to six months after the storm. At that time 40% of people reported they weren’t using birth control, while 4% experienced an unintended pregnancy because they couldn’t access care.

Ensuring every person, no matter who they are and where they live, has access to sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice, is foundational to their economic, mental, and physical well-being — especially during and after extreme weather events.

Abolishing the prison industrial complex includes factory farms and slaughterhouses. During climate crisis, prisoners—both human and nonhuman—are left to suffer and die. When Hurricane Helene struck, we knew hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of lives were left to drown in the path of the storm.

Thank you to @ash.with.earth for working to determine the nonhuman animal death toll from Hurricane Helene. The current estimated nonhuman death toll is in the millions. We shared mutual aid groups and sanctuaries to support in our saved story.

The human death toll from Helene has risen to 230.

Our hearts are with all the victims of climate catastrophe, especially those whose lives and struggles remain unseen. 💔

BREAKING: In a Monday decision, Fulton Judge Robert McBurney rules Georgia’s roughly six-week abortion ban is unconstitutional and blocks it from being enforced.

“Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is expected to ask the state Supreme Court to block today’s ruling and reinstate the ban this week. We are prepared to continue fighting this case regardless, and we will NOT back down from this fight.”

The court also found that a provision of the law which gave district attorneys broad access to the medical records of abortion care patients is a VIOLATION of Georgians' constitutional right to privacy.

This is a big deal for Floridians and Southerners, as we head into our sixth month of the six-week abortion ban. Whether this ruling will remain or be overturned is still uncertain, but for now, this will hopefully bring more access to abortion seekers and alleviate a little bit of the immense pressure abortion funds, providers, and their communities have been under, particularly in Georgia, across the South, and upstate abortion safe havens.
